National Aboriginal and
Islander Children’s Day Events 2007
Below is a sample of the
breadth of events being held across Australia to celebrate National
Aboriginal and Islander Children’s Day.
Please note that because
4 August falls on a Saturday this year, many services are holding
their events on the Friday (3 August) while one or two are holding
events after the weekend.

New South Wales
Aboriginal Infants and
Mothers Health Service (Narrandera District Hospital)
Narrandera
Kids day out at local
park, with Aboriginal groups helping to facilitate activities, which
will include face painting, hand painting on calico, making nature
bracelets, didgeridoo activities, family photos, Wiradjuri singing,
races facilitated by the men’s group, baby farm animals and
a ‘Healthy Eating’ bbq.

Teaching staff will compliment
their in-class Aboriginal Education programme with an art-craft-cultural

Young People’s Disco – Friday afternoon and evening
at the Cooinda Club, Port Augusta.
The Early Years Parenting
Centre

A bbq and family fun
day for families with children 0–5 years, including face painting,
games, balloons, ‘Sea of Hands’ event on their front
garden, and painting a community ‘Hands Mural’. This
will involve other local organisations involved in the early childhood
sector. They are expecting up 50 to 100 families, with about 150
to 200 children, to attend.

the community to celebrate children with cultural activities, entertainment
and a lunch.

the centre, with lunch featuring traditional Aboriginal food, and

at FW Kerr Kindergarten in Ferntree Gully, with a sausage sizzle,
Indigenous dancers, show bags, storytelling, face painting and a
dance party with DJs.

A range of children's
activities will be held at the Aborigines Advancement League, Thornbury,
including art and craft, Koori dancing, a jumping castle, face painting,
basketball and football clinics, and Karaoke and Dancing, and Kevin
the Koori Koala.

A children’s outing
to Bundoora Park, including activities with the farm animals, games,
rides and a family barbecue.

hosting an Elder to read a story to the children, face painting,
obstacle course, sandpit play, and providing Children’s Day
information for families.
2007 Poster and other
material
This year, SNAICC has
used positive images of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children
for our annual NAICD poster and leaflet. They show our children
proud, happy and confident about who they are – children from
the oldest living cultures on earth. Find out more about the poster
